Why we need you

Why we need you

A Maze of Story (AMoS) is only able to deliver its highly successful program in schools through the generosity of its members and volunteers. At present, the program is funded solely by membership dues and donations. However, the AMoS Board of Directors is currently working hard to obtain additional funding from alternative community-based sources and fundraising efforts.

There are a number of ways in which you can help:

  • Join – Become a member to support our ongoing work with marginalised children. Membership is only $40/year.
  • Donate – A Maze of Story is registered as a charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission ABN 62 825 323 441.  We welcome donations of any amount. Any donation you make is tax-deductible.
  • Volunteer – help us deliver the program in schools, or provide assistance with organising volunteers, liaising with schools or general tasks associated with the administration of AMoS.

Volunteers are integral to the delivery of the program. If you like working with children, please consider becoming an AMoS volunteer.

What the program looks like

Twelve children are selected by the school principal and/or classroom teachers to take part. The program is designed for those who might struggle in class or have difficulties, so children are selected based on need, not innate talent or writing ability.

Each session of the program takes two hours, once a week, over five weeks.

A Story-weaver leads each workshop. As the name suggests, the story-weaver is instrumental in the story-weaving process. They spark the children’s imaginations and provide them with the skills and tools they will need in order to weave their own stories, through activities and writing exercises.

The story-weaver is supported by a team of six volunteer tutors. Each tutor works with two children to help them complete the activities and encourage them during the writing of their stories.

All story-weavers and volunteers will be required to attend a short training workshop beforehand. On completion of the workshop, if you decide to join the team, we ask that you commit to five consecutive weeks of a scheduled workshop. Everyone having contact with the children will require a current Working with Children clearance. AMoS will subsidise the fee for this.
We have vacancies for both story-weavers and tutors.

Some people think they need to be good at spelling, writing and grammar to be a tutor. But really, all you need is a desire to see magic happen. Anyone between the ages of 18 and 80 is encouraged to sign up.

As the reputation of the program grows, so too does the list of schools wanting us to visit them. Currently, we have a number of primary schools patiently waiting for us to run a creative workshop for their students. We are constrained only by the number of volunteers we have. As more volunteers sign-up, more schools can be included in the program.

If you think this is something you would be interested in, you can download this document containing additional volunteer information or email Gae for further information.

As a growing organisation, we require assistance on a number of fronts: administration, fundraising, volunteer management, etc. If you have specific skills that you believe could be useful to us, or there is a particular task that you would be prepared to donate your time doing, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
